HELICOPTER OVER MANAMA, BAHRAIN - A Black Hawk helicopter takes off from Endurance Village near Manama with seven soldiers and three journalists on board. The paratroopers are part of the Bahrain Defense Force and demonstrate both the strength of the local military and the new parachute package.

At the International Defense Conference in Bahrain on Wednesday, Andrew Goodall, a former member of the British Parachute Regiment, who is currently a parachute instructor for the Royal Bahraini Guards Special Forces, jumped on the show.

Goodall, who has been training soldiers for five years, said he focuses on safety with the Bahraini soldiers, many of whom have no skydiving experience before entering the training program.

"I trained them from the ground up to be independent soldiers ... They might have been around helicopters a little bit, but they hadn't jumped before," Goodall told The Defense Post. "I strictly adhere to USPA and British Parachute Association safety regulations ... they know it very well. If they see anything wrong, they fix it because they know it's a danger."

Descent from 10,000 feet to 5,000 feet takes about 40 seconds, and after the first thousand feet (about 10 seconds) the pilot slows down, which means they are cruising, about 120 kilometers per hour.

Goodall's rigorous safety training is evident in the behavior of the Black Hawk paratroopers. When the helicopter lands, the soldiers check each other's bags and head back down the road. The wind picked up and they set off with smiles and thumbs up.

Parachutists tested Airborne Systems' Hi-5 parachute. The company sponsoring the event said the package will be better than others during the HALO project. With a 5:1 glide ratio and full coverage, the parachute allows soldiers to descend quickly and fly long distances.

During the demonstration, an Airborne Systems representative told the special forces officer to get as close as possible to the press camera; The man landed a foot in front of a Sky News cameraman and his parachute was attached to several news cameras.

Goodall trains skydivers not only to become professional skydivers, but also to become future instructors. They need about 200 jumps before completing two courses to teach future skydivers.

"You have to physically do the ground training to understand what's going on. It's 12 hard lessons. So it takes about 6 hours of ground school to teach someone who just jumps in and jumps out with them," he said.

Currently, about 30 students participate in the annual training program. Goodall trains them to a combination of USPA and British Parachute Association safety standards.

Bahrain Britain Army Pact To Boost Security

The Royal Special Forces were established in 2007 as part of Bahrain's efforts to modernize and expand its security forces. Goodall said he would not say where the troops would be stationed, but the unit was recognized in July for its actions in Yemen. Refugees have also been rescued as part of the European Union's Mediterranean Sophia project.
