Ford Island Fitness Center - Last week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration broke ground on the final phase of a $330 million effort to consolidate various Oahu offices into one campus on Ford Island.
The new 30-acre facility will be able to serve more than 700 NOAA employees and includes moorings, marine operations and the use of a new building connecting two historic hangars.

On Tuesday, NOAA, the Navy and Walsh Construction held a groundbreaking and blessing event in Hawaii for the final $131.1 million phase, which includes hangar work and new base construction, creating 310,000 square feet of space.

"About six years ago, NOAA formed a very productive relationship with the Navy in Hawaii to begin developing a new Pacific Regional Center here on historic Ford Island," said Larry Robinson, NOAA's Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Conservation and Management. "As the island undergoes its own revitalization plan, it has provided an ideal location for NOAA's new Pacific Regional Headquarters, with a deep-sea anchorage for ships, seawater for scientific research and space that can support more than 700 of people in the future."
Chicago-based Walsh Construction is hiring 500 construction workers for the final phase, which the Navy says will be completed in October 2012.
Berths, a storage facility and a shipping complex are already ready. Construction of the marine science and storage facility is expected to be completed in 2011, the Navy said.
NOAA offices on Oahu are spread from Hawaii Kai to Sand Island. By consolidating the programs into one facility, NOAA expects to achieve greater efficiencies and long-term operational savings.

The Pacific Regional Center's new flagship facility, an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act project, will include office space, a three-story skylit atrium, an auditorium, fitness center, dining and meeting rooms.
Photovoltaic panels, seawater air conditioning, a rainwater recycling system and the use of recycled materials are expected to earn the facility Gold status from the US Green Building Council for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
The new campus will house NOAA programs, including the National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service; National Oceanic Service; National Weather Service; National Marine Fisheries Service, Center for Ocean and Atmospheric Research, Marine and Aviation Operations; International Tsunami Information Centre; and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
